Locking your iPad to a single application for use as a kiosk


If you’re looking to use your iPad in aSingle-Use,Multi-User capacity in a public environment, you’ll no doubt be wanting to know how lock down the iPad to your desired application. Here’s a simple ‘how to’ on enabling ‘Guided Access’ (sometimes referred to as kiosk mode).


You’ll Find the Guided Access feature within your iPad’s Accessibility settings – It’s a simple and intuitive way to prevent users from switching in and out of other apps, or accessing additional features on the iPad, while allowing you to control which features are available. 


To set up guided access:

  1. Go to:Settings > General > Accessibility > Guided Access on your iPad
  2. Toggle the switch to ‘On’
  3. Set your desired Guided Access settings:
    1. Set a Passcode (or enable Face ID) to use with Guided Access
    2. Set Time Limit alert sounds if desired
    3. Set your Display Auto Lock preference

To start a guided access session

  1. Open the app that you want to lock the iPad to
  2. For iPads with a ‘Home’ button, press the home button 3 times

For iPads without a ‘Home’ button, press the top button 3 times

  1. Enter your passcode to start the session
  2. Select ‘Options’ in the bottom left corner of the screen to control settings including allowing/disallowing buttons or touch, setting a time limit for the session or selecting areas on the screen to disable from touch

To end a guided access session

  1. For iPads with a ‘Home’ button, press the home button 3 times

For iPads without a ‘Home’ button, press the top button 3 times

  1. Enter your passcode
  2. Press ‘End’ in the top left corner of the screen
