Setting up your Windows tablet as a single-app-kiosk


If you’re looking to use your tablet in aSingle-Use,Multi-User capacity in a public environment, you’ll no doubt be wanting to know how lock down the tablet to your desired application. Here’s a simple ‘how to’ on setting up your device as a single-app-kiosk (Also known as ‘Assigned Access’).


The ‘single-app kiosk’ feature allows you to run a single app above the lockscreen. When the kiosk account signs in, the app is launched automatically. The person using the kiosk cannot do anything on the device outside of the kiosk app.


For devices running Windows 10, version 1809

To set up a single-app-kiosk with Assigned Access:

  1. Ensure ‘User Access Control’ (UAC) is turned on
    1. Type UAC in the search field on your taskbar
    2. Click ‘Change User Account Control Settings’ in the search results
    3. To turn UAC on, drag the slider up to the desired level of security and click ‘OK’
    4. You may be prompted to confirm your selection or enter an administrator password.
    5. You may need to reboot your device for the change to take effect.
  2. Go toStart > Settings > Accounts > Other Userson your tablet 
  3. SelectSet up a kiosk > Assigned Access > Get started
  4. Enter a name for the new account

Note:If there are any local standard user accounts on the device already, the ‘Create and account’ page will offer the option to use an existing account

  1. Choose the app that you want to run when the kiosk account signs in

Note: Only apps that can run above the lock screen will be available in the list to choose from

    1. If you select Microsoft Edge as the kiosk app, then configure the following options:
      1. Whether Microsoft Edge should display your website full-screen (digital sign) or with some browser controls available (public browser)
      2. Which URL should be displayed when the kiosk accounts signs in
      3. When Microsoft Edge should restart after a period of inactivity (if you select to run as a public browser)
  1. Press ‘Close’

To disable a single-app-kiosk:

  1. Select the account tile on the ‘Set up a kiosk’ page
  2. Select ‘Remove kiosk’


For devices running Windows 10, version 1803 and earlier

When setting up a single-app-kiosk (also known as ‘Assigned Access’) in Settings, you must select an existing local standard user account.

  1. Go toStart > Settings > Accounts > Other people
  2. SelectSet up Assigned Access
  3. Choose an account
  4. Choose the app that you want to run as a single-app-kiosk

Note: Only apps that can run above the lock screen will be available in the list to choose from

  1. CloseSettings. Your choices are saved automatically, and will be applied the next time that user account logs on

To remove Assigned Access:

  1. Go toStart > Settings > Accounts
  2. Select the account using ‘Assigned Access’
  3. SelectTurn off Assigned Access
  4. Sign out of the account
